Bio
Hartshorn previously taught courses in graphic design and fine arts at University
of Massachusetts Lowell, The Art Institute of Boston, Newbury College, and Massachusetts
College of Art and Design. He holds both an MFA (graphic design, interdisciplinary
forms and works on paper, 2008) and a BFA (graphic design, 1992) from the Art Institute
of Boston /Lesley University.
Hartshorn’s teaching is grounded in 18 years of professional experience co-founding
and managing a graphic design and communications firm, Paratore Hartshorn Communications,
which was later acquired by Gearon Hoffman Advertising, Boston, in 2001. His roles
on a variety of projects have covered a range: art director, senior graphic designer,
director, and producer supervising the development of integrated design/marketing
strategies using the web, print, video and film. His regional and national clients
have included National Geographic, Converse, IBM, Oracle, The Museum of Science (Boston),
CFO Magazine, Bank Boston, and Sovereign Bank. In addition to his full-time teaching,
Hartshorn continues to consult as a freelance art director, specializing in design
strategy, branding and advertising.
An exhibiting artist, Hartshorn creates interdisciplinary installation, sculpture and works on paper exploring and critiquing art and design technology and ideology in contemporary culture. In the past he has exhibited work in the following selected venues: The University of Massachusetts Lowell, Good Question Gallery, Milford, PA, Bunker Hill Community College, Boston, MA, Thomas E. Hanley Art Gallery, Falmouth, MA and the Cape Cod Museum of Art Dennis, MA.
