Prevention and Management of Oral Complications of Cancer Care: Promoting Quality of Life Through Use of Rhode Island Cancer and Oral Health Resources

Program Description:

This enduring educational activity, jointly provided by CCRI and the Partnership to Reduce Cancer in Rhode Island, will provide nurses, dental professionals, and other members of the healthcare team with information about how oral health impacts the patient’s quality of life. Members of the healthcare team will learn of the impact of cancer care on increasing risk for oral health problems, and strategies for prevention and management of dental disease. Web-based resources available to healthcare professionals when working with clients and their families will be introduced.

Learning Outcome:

As a result of this activity, the learner will:

  • gain knowledge of the impact of cancer care on one’s oral health as it relates to their quality of life, the importance of oral health risk assessment, screening, anticipatory guidance and referral, and resources available to help members of the patient’s healthcare team to provide these services.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe how the patient’s quality of life is impacted through the relationship between oncology treatment and oral health.
  • Review strategies healthcare professionals can use to prevent and manage oral complications of cancer care through a four-step process.
  • Discuss available informational resources, such as the Rhode Island Cancer and Oral Health Resource Guide (RICORG) that provide information for healthcare professionals and patients.

Credit Designation: 

  • Nursing - This nursing continuing professional development activity is provided by Community College of Rhode Island for one nursing contact hour. Community College of Rhode Island is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Northeast Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation. Expiration Date 12/10/2025
  • Dental Professionals - This program qualifies for 1 continuing education credit through the Community College of Rhode Island, a CODA-accredited institution. Expiration Date 12/10/2025
  • Social Workers - This program has been approved by NASW-Rhode Island Chapter in accordance with the Regulations of Rhode Island Social Work Board of Licensure for 1.0 Continuing Education Credit. Expiration Date 4/30/2025.
