Program Description: This virtual, educational activity will provide both physicians and medical professionals an introduction to the transgender community, including how to provide gender-affirming care and use appropriate vocabulary to improve the patient-provider relationship and decrease healthcare disparities. Physicians and healthcare professionals will learn about the barriers members of the transgender community face when accessing healthcare, as well as strategies to recognize and decrease barriers to care.

Who Should Attend: Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Psychologists, Social Workers, Medical Students, Dental Professionals, Residents & Fellows, CCRI Allied and Rehab Health Students, Faculty, Alumni, and Clinical Instructors.

Learning Outcomes: At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Provide culturally sensitive care in practice by using language that is respectful and avoiding terms that can be harmful or traumatic to transgender patients.
  • Provide more sensitive care to transgender patients due to an increased understanding of barriers transgender patients face in healthcare.

Criteria for Successful Completion

  • View the presentation.
  • Complete a post-activity evaluation reporting whether the learning outcomes were met and intent to change practice.

Accreditation: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the Community College of Rhode Island. The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. 

Credit Designation:

Physicians: The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University designates this live activity for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Expires 9/3/2023.

  • Rhode Island Specific:   This program qualifies for 2.0 hours of CME Credit in Cultural Awareness, one of the required areas of section 6.0; 6.2.1 RI CME re-licensure requirements 

Nurses:  This program has been approved for 2.0 nursing contact hours by Community College of Rhode Island. Community College of Rhode Island is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Northeast Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. Expires 6/10/2023.

Psychologists: Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance stating this program is designated for 2.0 hours AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. This credit is accepted by the Rhode Island Board of Psychology. Expires 9/3/2023.

Other Healthcare Professionals: Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance stating this program is designated for 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Many other disciplines accept this credit toward re-licensure or recertification, including the AAPA and AANP. Check with your state licensing board to verify.
