General Education Committee

The mission of the CCRI Faculty Senate General Education Committee is to oversee and periodically review and revise CCRI’s policy on General Education, facilitate the development of general education courses in accordance with the standards of the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and the policies of the Rhode Island Council on Post-Secondary Education, provide feedback on, approve, or reject course applications for general education status, and monitor assessment of the general education curriculum.

Better align Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) to Gen Ed Skill Categories	In progress
Explore increasing the number of Gen Ed courses offering under-represented Skill Categories, such as: Skill category 2b, “Develop digital and information literacy to locate, evaluate, and synthesize using online tools and/or artificial intelligence (AI) to accomplish a specific purpose” Skill Category 4b, “Function effectively in social and professional environments and make reasoned decisions based on ethical standards, self-awareness, and personal responsibility.”	In progress
Create policy language/banner policy that enshrines student completion of Gen Ed requirements protecting their completion from later policy changes. Creating language for DegreeWorks (and later inclusion in the General Education policy) that clarifies how DegreeWorks will treat student completion of courses that are/not general education courses in the Catalog Year in which students complete the course, as well as how such courses will be treated if students change their Catalog Year.
