CCRI awarded $4.6 Million in federal TRIO student support services grants

The Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) today announced that it has been awarded
three, five-year, federal TRIO Student Support Services grants from the U.S. Department
of Education totaling $4.6 million.
The grants will allow CCRI to provide enhanced academic and other support services
to approximately 540 low-income, first-generation students and/or college students
with disabilities to increase students’ retention and graduation rates; facilitate
their transfer from two- to four-year colleges; and foster an institutional climate
supportive of the success of low-income and first-generation college students and
individuals with disabilities.
“We know that many of our first-generation and low-income students, as well as our
students with disabilities, face challenges from the first day they enter our college.
Our TRIO programs have proven to be a critical resource that provides students with
access to the programs and support services they need to be successful college students,”
said Meghan Hughes, Ph.D., president of CCRI.
CCRI’s TRIO Student Support Services programs, known as ACCESS to Opportunity, were
established 40 years ago and have supported thousands of first-generation and low-income
students in finding academic success by providing eligible students with a comprehensive
continuum of support. Services include a structured first-year experience; a project-specific
Student Success Seminar; in-depth, proactive academic advising; professional tutoring;
financial aid advising and application assistance; a financial literacy workshop series;
and ongoing transfer advising. Additional services include ongoing career development
– highlighted by workforce exploration – as well as civic engagement, and social integration
and cultural experiences.

The event will be led by CCRI’s dental hygiene students, who will provide preventative care under the supervision of licensed professionals.

The hub will serve as a state-of-the-art learning environment designed to meet the growing demand for skilled culinary professionals in Rhode Island’s workforce.

For students like Esther Duran, of Providence, Wanda Wrobleski, of Cumberland, and Richard Garcia, of Providence, the journey to a fulfilling career in healthcare has been transformed thanks to the Community College of Rhode Island and the Metallica Scholars Initiative (MSI). Funded by a $75,000 grant from the legendary rock band’s foundation, All Within My Hands, this initiative provides financial support to students enrolled in CCRI’s Medical Assistant and Patient Support Specialist workforce training programs—helping to alleviate financial burdens and empower students to focus on their education and career goals.

The Community College of Rhode Island's (CCRI) student-run theatre group, the CCRI Players, proudly marks half a century of participation in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) Region 1, held this year at Central Connecticut State University. Over the five-day event, the Players distinguished themselves by securing 10 awards across various disciplines, including acting and properties design.
February marks Black History Month, a time to celebrate the contributions of Black Americans in this country; a time to acknowledge the lasting achievements of the people of the African diaspora who have shaped American history; and a time to walk alongside today’s Black leaders as they lead the work to create a truly anti-racist, inclusive community for all.
The Community College of Rhode Island announces its Fall 2024 Dean's List. Students enrolled in a degree program who have completed 12 credits with a grade point average of 3.25 or higher this semester with no grade lower than “C” are eligible for this scholastic honor.
