An Introduction to Transgender Health

This educational activity will provide physicians and medical professionals an introduction to the transgender community, including how to provide culturally-sensitive care and use appropriate vocabulary to improve the patient-provider relationship and decrease healthcare disparities. Dr. Michelle Forcier, Director of Gender and Health Services at Hasbro Children's Hospital, will present Creating an Inclusive Healthcare Environment for Transgender Patients, and a discussion amongst panelists will provide healthcare professionals an overview of the barriers members of the transgender community face when accessing healthcare, as well as strategies to recognize and decrease these barriers to care.

An Introduction to Trauma Informed Care

The purpose of this educational activity is to provide nurses, social workers, emergency and healthcare professionals with an introduction to trauma informed care, improving their knowledge and understanding of the impact of emotional and psychological trauma on stress and behavior. This training will provide an overview of what trauma is, the negative effects trauma has on symptoms and behaviors, and will help healthcare professionals be able to recognize signs and symptoms of trauma, realize the widespread effects of trauma, and integrate knowledge of trauma into practices and procedures.

Changing the Culture of Pain Treatment Symposium

The purpose of this interprofessional educational program will be to change the culture of pain management by promoting non-opioid therapies for pain. Various evidence-based alternative treatment modalities such as clinical massage therapy, acupuncture, physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic care, naturopathic medicine, cognitive behavioral therapy, and community health services will be introduced. Panelists will discuss their approaches to specific patient case examples giving providers the knowledge to choose the best treatment path for their patients.
