Release of Student Information
CCRI is committed to protecting student privacy while complying with legal obligations regarding the release of student information. We adhere to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other applicable laws. There are several circumstances under which student information may be released. Below, we outline three key types of information release: Directory Information, Solomon Amendment Requests, and Public Records Requests or Access to Public Records Act (APRA) inquiries. Each category has specific guidelines and limitations to ensure both transparency and the protection of student rights.
1. Directory Information Requests Under FERPA
Directory information is information contained in an education record that would not generally be considered harmful or an invasion of privacy if disclosed. Directory information may be used in community college publications, and may be disclosed to any person or organization whether or not affiliated with the community college, without the student’s written consent. For more informaton on CCRI's Directory Information Policy, visit https://catalog.ccri.edu/about-community-college/ferpa-notification/. Requests for Directory Information can be emailed to the Records Office at [email protected].
2. Solomon Amendment Information Requests
The Solomon Amendment (10 U.S.C. § 983) is a federal law that allows military recruiters to access some address, biographical and academic program information on students age 17 and older who are or were registered for at least one credit hour in the requested semester/term. For more informaton on CCRI's Solomon Amendment procedures, visit https://catalog.ccri.edu/about-community-college/ferpa-notification/. Written requests from military recruiters under the Solomon Amendment can be delivered in-person to One Stop Student Services at our Warwick, Lincoln, Providence, or Newport campuses, or via email to [email protected].
3. Public Recrods Requests under APRA
As a public institution, the Community College of Rhode Island is subject to the Rhode Island Access to Public Records Act, R.I.G.L. §§ 38-2-1 to -16 ("APRA"). APRA is a state law designed to promote transparency in government by providing access to public records of state agencies and other public bodies in Rhode Island. At CCRI, we are dedicated to responding to public records requests in a timely manner, while also safeguarding the privacy rights of our students and employees in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. For more informaton on CCRI's Public Records Request procedures, please visit https://www.ccri.edu/about/public-records.pdf. Written requests to inspect public records can be mailed or dropped off at the Community College of Rhode Island, Marketing & Communications, Warwick Campus, 400 East Avenue, 3rd Floor, Warwick RI 02886, Attn: Jacqueline Hogan, Executive Assistant, or emailed to [email protected].
