While the Rules of Conduct Code outlines the formal rules for student behavior, the
foundation of our ommunity is built on a deeper, shared commitment to civility and
respect. These principles are central to the
college’s mission and inform all interactions on campus. All students, employees,
and guests are expected to treat one another with dignity through respectful greetings,
appropriate language, professional appearance, and considerate actions. Civility is
reflected in how we speak, act, and engage with others. We strive to embrace varied
perspectives and foster an environment where all individuals feel welcomed and valued.
As a college community, we are dedicated to creating a culture that promotes mutual
respect, a passion for
learning, and a commitment to personal and collective growth. Civility and respect
should guide all interactions, both in and out of the classroom. This includes:
- Arriving to class on time, engaging actively, minimizing distractions, respecting
diverse viewpoints, meeting deadlines, and accommodating others' needs.
- Recognizing that, as the state's only community college, we are open and welcoming
to all Rhode Island residents pursuing education and personal development.
- Embracing the college's diversity as a strength and ensuring that no one is treated
with disrespect or made to feel inferior.
- Addressing disagreements calmly and constructively, with a sincere effort to understand
opposing views.
- Referring unresolved conflicts to designated college officials and rejecting all forms
of violence, harassment, and verbal or mental abuse.
- Refraining from speech or behavior that is inflammatory, obscene, sarcastic, rude,
or disruptive to the learning environment.
- Civility and respect are more than just expectations—they are the values that define
who we are as a college community. These standards are not enforced solely through
discipline but through collective accountability. If your conduct is questioned, reflect
on the principles above: strive to understand differences, maintain respectful dialogue,
and seek assistance from college support services to resolve conflicts appropriately.
