Davila Jackley

Davila Jackley, this year’s Student Government President for the Community College of Rhode Island Liston Campus, never needed much of a push to get involved in activities outside of the classroom.

As a high school student at the Academy for Career Exploration in her hometown of Providence, Jackley became drawn to student outreach while watching classmates participate in bake sales and fundraisers. Through the Rhode Island Promise Plus program, she is now flourishing at CCRI as an advocate for fellow students who share her motivation to succeed.

The key for Jackley is balancing life’s demands in and out of the classroom. In addition to taking five classes a semester, she works five days a week as a counselor at the Boys & Girls Club’s Southside Clubhouse in Providence and still maintains a 3.9 GPA.

To stay on track, Jackley has taken advantage of all the resources available at CCRI, from hands-on assistance through peer tutoring to joining clubs and participating in community outreach projects, among them the college’s Emerging Leaders program. Becoming the Liston Campus President has further enhanced her CCRI experience, allowing her the opportunity to meet Governor Gina Raimondo and speak at the Rhode Island State House.

An influential voice on campus, Jackley has used her story to highlight the importance of the college’s most valuable assets – scholarships, transfer opportunities, internships, or anything students might not realize is available at their fingertips.

“CCRI is a great place to be and we need to let all students, present and future, know why,” she said.

A Political Science and Communications major, Jackley plans to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a career in public service. With networking among her top priorities, she recently enrolled in the College Leadership Rhode Island (CLRI) program, a year-long workshop designed to teach important leadership skills to prepare students for life beyond the classroom. She is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for two-year colleges.

“I love being involved and working with fellow students on achieving their goals,” Jackley said. “The doors that have opened up for me this past year reinforce why I chose CCRI.”
