What is Financial Aid Verification?
Financial Aid Verification is a process where a college checks the accuracy of the information you submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The goal is to confirm that the financial details used to calculate your aid are correct. This process is required by the U.S. Department of Education for some students before financial aid can be finalized.
What Financial Aid Verification Means
Verification happens when your FAFSA is randomly selected or flagged for review. Your college’s financial aid office (CCRI) must confirm certain information before releasing aid.
About 1 in 3 FAFSA applications are selected for verification in some years.
During verification, the school compares:
-
FAFSA information
-
Tax documents
-
Other financial records
If everything matches, your financial aid is approved.
Why Students Are Selected for Verification
Students may be selected because:
-
FAFSA was randomly chosen
-
Income information looks inconsistent
-
Missing or incomplete information
-
Household size or number in college needs confirmation
Being selected does NOT mean you did anything wrong.
