New Introduction to Table Games Dealer Training course comes to CCRI in August

In partnership with Bally’s, The Community College of Rhode Island is launching its first Introduction to Table Games Dealer Training course in August.

This free six-week, 96-hour in-person course offers participants the opportunity to learn to deal Blackjack and novelty games such as Spanish 21, Let it Ride, Three Card Poker, and Texas Hold’em. Students will also learn about customer service, conflict resolution, gaming etiquette, cheque breakdowns, card and currency handling, and preparation for live auditioning and licensing to work in the gaming industry as entry-level Dealers. Classes begin August 19. Additional information is available online at ccri.edu/workforce/technologyonline.

“CCRI's ability to partner with local employers to develop and deliver in-demand training is a testament to our dedication to addressing workforce needs. This new gaming-focused curriculum highlights our commitment to providing students with the skills necessary to thrive in high-demand industries, further enhancing their career prospects and contributing to the local economy,” said Rosemary A. Costigan, Ph.D., RN, Interim President of CCRI.

“This is yet another prime example of the college assessing a skills gap in a specific industry, partnering to co-design customized curriculum, and delivering world-class workforce training for our employer partners,” said CCRI’s Vice President of Workforce Partnerships Jennie Johnson. “We are excited to launch this course and look forward to delivering future gaming curriculum to continue meeting workforce needs.”

“It is an honor to partner with CCRI in launching its Introduction to Table Games Dealer Training course this August. This initiative is a significant step in highlighting the value of hospitality and gaming professions, and we are committed to showcasing meaningful career choices that offer long-term opportunities and growth. Our partnership with CCRI underscores our dedication to supporting individuals in building rewarding careers within this vibrant industry,” said Craig Eaton, Bally’s President, Rhode Island Operations.

Courses will be held at CCRI’s Lincoln Campus, which features a new, state-of-the-art table games simulated classroom setting to help acclimate students to the daily gaming environment when working as a certified blackjack dealer. Students interested in applying must fill out the online program inquiry form and attend an Info Session either Wednesday, July 24 from 3–5:30 pm or Tuesday, June 30 from 12:30–3 pm, both at CCRI’s Lincoln Campus. Info Session attendees will watch a live demonstration from lead instructor Andrew Toye, a Dual Rate Floor Manager at Bally's Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort; and, if interested in participating in the training, undergo a mandatory math assessment and interview.

The college in September announced a $5 million donation from Bally’s Corporation, the largest in the college’s history, to develop and launch new programming in the gaming, hospitality, and security industries and to support student scholarships. The launch of the college’s Introduction to Table Games is the first step in CCRI’s development of new programming in the gaming and hospitality industries. The initiative aligns with CCRI’s proven track record of expanding new programs and degree pathways for students and meeting the workforce’s labor needs. Table Games Dealers in Rhode Island are paid a base wage plus tips, called “tokes,” that has been averaging $20+ per hour for the last several years.

CCRI's Division of Workforce Partnerships works in close collaboration with industry and business leaders to ensure the college’s offerings are meeting both current and future workforce needs. The division builds and delivers workforce training solutions in business, finance, technology, education, healthcare, manufacturing and trades, and renewable energy.
