Knights Wallop Warriors 11-2 in Region XXI Opener!

Warwick, R.I. – May 10, 2019: The CCRI Knights baseball team opened up their 2019 playoff campaign on Thursday afternoon as they hosted the Massasoit Community College Warriors. The game was scoreless until the fifth inning and CCRI kept the scoring going, winning the game 11-2 in eight innings. The win improves CCRI's season record to 22-10 overall, 14-1 in Region XXI play and 13-1 in League play.

The first game of CCRI's 2019 post season campaign started slowly, with no runs scored after four innings. CCRI broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take a 4-0 lead over the Warriors. Freshman Anthony Ramos (Cranston, RI) hit a double through the left side to put a man on second and third. Sophomore co-captain Zack Odsen (Providence, RI) hit into a double play but was able to knock the first run of the game in as sophomore Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) scored from third base. Sophomore Justin Brown (Wallingford, CT) and Anthony Ramos both came home for the second and third runs after a throwing error. Freshman Alejandro Martinez (Cranston, RI) batted in the fourth run with a double to center field, scoring sophomore Joey Barter (Coventry, RI).

Massasoit were able to cut the deficit in half, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth before the Knights scored four more runs in the bottom half to take an 8-2 lead. Two walks gave the Knights free bases and sophomore co-captain Nick D'Ambra (Coventry, RI) capitalized, knocking both runners in off a double to right field. Zack Odsen batted in his second run of the day, scoring Nick D'Ambra with a double to left field. The final run of the inning came from a double to right-center off the bat of Joey Barter that scored Zack Odsen from second base.

CCRI would score three more runs in the eighth inning. The first came from Alejandro Martinez and his infield single that brought Justin Brown home. The game ended when sophomore Ray Aponte (East Providence, RI) hit a walk-off double to left-center field that scored Joey Barter and Alejandro Martinez to end the game in eight innings with CCRI on top 11-2.

A strong pitching performance form sophomore Zack D'Andrea (Warwick, RI) kept the Warriors quiet at the plate. D'Andrea threw seven solid innings, allowing just four hits and two runs while striking out nine Massasoit batters. Freshman Peter Cohen (North Attleboro, MA) came in for one inning of relief where he struck out one batter and didn't concede a single hit.

The Knights were led at the plate by Alejandro Martinez as he batted 3-5 on the day with a double and two singles as well as two RBI. Nick D'Ambra went 2-4, one double and one single with two RBI and one run scored. Anthony Ramos was 2-5, a double and a single with one run scored. Zack Odsen recorded a 1-4 performance and tallied two RBI and a run scored. Ray Aponte notched two RBI while going 1-5 with a walk-off double. Joey Barter batted 1-2, a double with two runs scored and one RBI. Justin Brown scored twice in the game as he went 1-2 with a double. Sophomore Jacob Frost (Cranston, RI) rounded off the hitting as he went 1-3, a single with a run scored.

The CCRI Knights baseball team will next be in action on Saturday, May 11th at 11:00 a.m. as they face off with the Northern Essex Community College Knights at Quinsigamond Community College located at 670 W Boylston St, Worcester, MA 01606 for the second round of Region XXI playoff games.
