Knights Split Doubleheader With DI Monroe!

Warwick, R.I. – April 15, 2019: The CCRI Knights baseball hosted the Monroe College Mustangs of New Rochelle, NY for a Sunday doubleheader. CCRI would take game one 2-1 with Monroe winning game two 8-3. The split sets CCRI's season record to 15-10 overall, 9-1 in Region XXI play and 8-1 in League play.

Game 1: CCRI – 2 Monroe – 1 (7 Innings)

CCRI struck early in game one with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Monroe would cut the lead in half, scoring one run in the top of the sixth inning. CCRI held tight and would win game one 2-1.

The CCRI offense totaled six hits with sophomore Justin Brown (Wallingford, CT) batting 1-3 with a double and one RBI. Freshman David Meech (Douglas, MA) went 1-2 with a single and one RBI off a sac fly. Freshman Alejandro Martinez (Cranston, RI) batted 1-2 with a single. Sophomore co-captain Nick D'Ambra (Coventry, RI) went 1-3 with a single and a run scored. Sophomore Joey Barter (Coventry, RI), freshman Adrian Duran (Providence, RI) both batted 1-3 with singles.

Sophomore co-captain Zack Odsen started on the mound for the Knights and threw five solid innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four batters in route for his first win of the season. Freshman Riley Beard (North Kingston, RI) came in for the remaining two innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. It was enough for Beard to record his first save of the season.

Game 2: CCRI – 3 Northern Essex – 8 (7 Innings)

Game two saw CCRI struggle a bit at the plate. The Knights were held to just two hits whereas Monroe accrued nine hits. Monroe struck first with one run in the top of the second with CCRI answering back with one run in the bottom half to tie the game up at 1-1. More scoring in the third inning with Monroe scoring once and CCRI tallying two runs to take a 3-2 lead. The CCRI bats would fall quiet and go scoreless the remaining four innings whilst Monroe amassed six runs, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to wing game two 8-3.

At the plate, CCRI was led by Sophomore Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) batting 1-2, a single with a run scored. Freshman James Pederson (Westerly, RI) recorded the other hit while going 1-3 with a. single and one RBI. the other two runs were batted in by sophomore Asa Nyblom (Wakefield, RI) and sophomore Jacob Frost (Cranston, RI) on sac flies.

Pitching for the Knights in game two was freshman Peter Cohen (North Attleboro, MA) who threw five and one third innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs. Freshman John DeRouin (Cranston, RI) came in for relief, allowing two hits and two earned runs. Kyle McCann pitched the final two innings of the game in which he allowed three hits, three runs while striking out four batters.

The CCRI Knights baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, April 16th at 3:30 p.m. as they host the Massasoit Community College Warriors for a single game.
