Men’s Soccer Surpass Southern Maine Seawolves

Warwick, R.I. – October 1, 2018: The CCRI Knights men's soccer team traveled northwards to South Portland, ME to take on the Seawolves of Southern Maine Community College. The Knights kept it tight at the back and quick upfront, creating a well-balanced game that ended in a 2-0 victory. The win improves CCRI's season record to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in Region XXI play.

A scenic New England autumn afternoon up near the coast was the backdrop for the game on a sunny Saturday. Head Coach Gabe Toro was excited to see his midfield knock the ball around after playing a lot of futsal inside for training during this rainy week back home. Playing inside with limited space makes players faster in decision making, which is what the Knights midfielders need to do in order to make the team better. In the midfield, Randy Kouadio (East Providence, RI) and Cheikh N'diaye (North Providence, RI) got the start. They did a good job of moving the ball and activating the forwards and outside midfielders. Edmilo Goncalves (Praia, Cape Verde) played up front for the Knights and he contributed to the first goal of the game with an assist to Takhy Aidara (Pawtucket, RI) in the 20th minute.

In the second half Coach Toro changed the midfield to see who has the best chemistry. Co-captain Mouhamadou Diouf (Dakar, Senegal), and Jonatan Alvarez (La Seu d'Urgell, Catalonia) filled in the midfield and they did a good job as well to move the ball and create offensive chances. Coach Toro is still trying to find the best combination for that middle part of the field. Mouhamadou Diouf was able to get into rhythm and he put Prince Sawyer (Pawtucket, RI) and Delpio Alves (East Providence, RI) into great scoring position on the outside of the pitch. Prince Sawyer had plenty of field to work with after receiving fantastic passes from Diouf. Prince and Delpio's speed and dribbling skills were on display this game.

At the 72nd minute of the game Mouhamadou Diouf took the game into his own hands and dribbled in from 35 yards out as he went by several Seawolves before firing a shot past the goalkeeper for the second goal of the game. Juan Gonzalez (Providence, RI) was in the net for the Knights and he recorded the first shutout as a Knight goalkeeper in a few years. Coach Toro was delighted to see his team pass the ball around with speed and accuracy consistently for the first time this season. Hopefully there is more to come in the future as the team begins to believe in their ability as a unit. Elton Soares Sequiera (Central Falls, RI), Co-captain Dante Turano (Westerly, RI), Jacob Leander (West Warwick, RI) and Anthony Serluca (Westerly, RI) all had solid games on the defensive side. They all did their part in setting the team up for the win and also gave the offense confidence to move up and attack.

The Knights will next take the field on Tuesday, October 2nd at 4pm as they travel to face the Warriors of Massasoit Community College in a pivotal Region XXI clash.
