Walt "Stretch" Edwards

Edwards is considered one of the best “big men” CCRI has ever had. “Stretch” is one of CCRI’s all-time leading scorers with 682 points is the all-time leading rebounder with 761.

After CCRI, he went to play at Providence College for one season and then went on to play for Husson University in his last year.  He was inducted into Husson University’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.  Over there he went undefeated, winning 30 games in a row, only losing in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament.  That basketball team was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2012. In that 1976 season, he set the college’s record of 479 rebounds, which is yet to be beaten.

Since graduating from Husson, he went to be the director of Angelo Zuccolo Recreation Center and a counselor of juveniles at the Rhode Island Training School.

Dr. William Garrahan

Dr. Garrahan had dedicated more than 18 years of his life to CCRI Athletics. His official role was orthopedic consultant, but he did so much more than that.

He was one of the biggest fans and boosters of CCRI athletics, being a member of the college’s foundation and gave thousands upon thousands of hours helping injured student athletes.  He was an integral part of CCRI’s “athletic family."

Dr. Garrahan achieved plenty of accolades such as, becoming a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He was a very well-respected surgeon, serving as Chief of the Kent Country Medical Staff and President of the Kent County Medical Society and President of the Rhode Island Orthopedic Society.

Later on in his life, he found a passion for Senior Track and Field, competing against US and International Olympians, he went on to win several US National gold medals for his age group and then became the President of Rhode Island’s Senior Olympics.  He received an Amby Smith award for his service to the state and in 2005, he was inducted into LaSalle Academy’s Hall of Fame.

Michael Lombardi

Lombardi was an outstanding golfer and contributor for CCRI. From 1974-1975, he was a consistent golfer for the team and in 1975, he was the teams MVP.

After graduating from CCRI, Lombardi went on to give his talents to Providence College.  His family owns the Cranston Country Club and allows the golf team to use their course for home matches and practice.
