The Study Abroad Program at the Community College of Rhode Island offers the intellectual and social opportunity for CCRI students to have a choice to study more than 75 study abroad programs in 29 countries around the world for a semester, summer or full academic year. Curricular options include intensive foreign language courses as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences, physical sciences, business, studio art and design and marketing.

The College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS), of which the Community College of Rhode Island is a member, consists of almost 200 colleges and universities, two-and four-year, public and private, which cooperate to offer over 2,000 students the opportunity to study abroad each year. The programs consist of a wide range of academic areas, including Liberal Arts, Business, Intensive Language, Visual and Performing Arts, Art History and Human Services.

General Information

  • All courses except for languages are taught in English.
  • Students may live with local families, or in college-approved apartments or residence halls, depending on the location of the program.
  • All credits earned while studying abroad transfer to CCRI and with prior approval, will count towards graduation. However, in order to transfer Study Abroad credits back to CCRI (whether for enrichment or formal program), you must submit an application directly through the CCRI Study Abroad office.
  • The cost of a semester varies with the institution selected, but would include tuition, fees, books, supplies, housing, meals, airfare and personal expenses for one semester. The shorter sessions are less expensive, varying with the location and program.
  • Deadlines for spring semester applications are usually mid October, summer late March and for fall, late May. Dr. Hossiri Godo-Solo, Chair of the Department of World Languages & Cultures, recommends beginning to plan at least a year in advance, so there is plenty of time to decide on the best location and academic program, and no financial surprises will be encountered.
  • A valid US passport is required for all programs; visas are required for some countries, at an extra charge.
  • Information about courses offered in the semester you will be abroad and housing choices will be sent to you directly from the sponsoring institution after you are accepted into their program.

Financial Aid Process

Financial aid can be applied to costs, if you qualify. The Financial Aid Office will determine your eligibility. See contact information on right in order to speak with or schedule an appointment with, a Financial Aid Officer.

You must apply through the Community College of Rhode Island to receive financial aid for any study abroad program you choose. Financial aid can be used to support summer study, as long as you are enrolled for academic credit and you meet all the other requirements. It is a good idea to apply early.
