CCRI Student Lucas Johnson Named Rhode Island’s 2025 New Century Transfer Scholar

Warwick, RI- Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) student and Warwick resident, Lucas Johnson, has been named a 2025 New Century Transfer Scholar and will receive a $2,250 scholarship.

New Century Transfer Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom - with just one winner selected from each state. The program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa, and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). This year, nearly 2,100 students were nominated from more than 1,300 college campuses across the country.

“We are extremely proud of Lucas’ remarkable achievement as a 2025 New Century Transfer scholar,” said Interim President Rosemary A. Costigan, Ph.D., RN. “This prestigious recognition reflects Lucas’ exceptional dedication and hard work both within and beyond the classroom throughout his time at CCRI.”

Johnson is a member of CCRI’s Pi Omicron chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society for two-year colleges, which holds students to the highest standards of academic excellence.

“Winning the New Century Transfer Scholarship is an incredible honor - I’m excited for the opportunities ahead, and grateful for the support I’ve received from faculty and other students throughout my time at CCRI,” said Johnson, “I’ve pushed myself day in and day out for the past two years to put myself in positions like these, and this is proof that through hard work, there is no limit on who any of us can become.”

Johnson will be honored at the AACC convention in Nashville, TN this April.
