2018 CCRI Golf Team

Warwick, R.I. – May 24, 2018: The CCRI Knights golf team rounded off day two of the Region XXI Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. A subpar team performance on day one meant that every member of the team would need to improve to give the Knights a chance at qualifying for the National Tournament. Along with the teams from Massasoit Community College and MassBay Community College, individuals form Bristol Community College, Springfield Technical Community College and Holyoke Community College were in the field as well.

Indeed, every member of the CCRI team bettered they day one score, with the team shooting a whopping 29 strokes better than that of the prior day. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as CCRI placed third, shooting a team 347 on day two for a tournament total of 723. MassBay placed as runner-up with a day two score of 338 and a total of 684. Massasoit won the Region XXI Tournament after posting a day two score of 337 for a tournament total of 677.

Leading CCRI was Captain Tyler Boisclair (West Warwick, RI) carding a +8, 79. Boisclair improved drastically upon the back nine, posting a 3+ 39 on the way in, bettering the day one tally of +10 on the back side. Overall Tyler pared 11 of the 18 holes and stayed out of trouble, dropping very few shots. Boisclair's 79 was five strokes better than his day one score of 84 and earned him third place in the tournament and All-Region XXI honors for the second year in a row. In addition, Boisclair also earned a spot at the NJCAA Division III National Tournament.

Coming in second for the Knights was Michael Occhi (Portsmouth, RI) with a +16, 87. Occhi like Boisclair had much better fortune on the back nine on day two than day one. Mike went out in +9, 44 and came in with a +7, 43. The back-side performance was four strokes better than that of day one and Occhi shot a total of five strokes better in day two, posting 87 versus his day one total of 92.

Kyle Dagesse saw the most improvement between the two rounds, carding an impressive +17, 88 which was 13 strokes better than the day one performance. Dagesse, like his teammates saw great improvement on the final nine holes, sticking with what he knew, his iron play to, stay out of trouble. Kyle went out in +14, 9, one stroke better than day one. On the back nine, Dagesse really came alive raking up five pars and one stunning birdie to add up to a +3, 39. That birdie came from arguably one of the best shots of the day. Kyle found the fairway on 14, a par 4, 349-yard slight dogleg right. A bit further back off the tee than Dagesse would like, he had approximately 190 yards left in. Kyle took a long iron and flew the ball to pin high, three feet left of the cup for a tap in birdie. The 88 was a massive improvement on the day one 101 and gave the Knights a chance down the stretch.

The fourth score for CCRI came off the back of Colby Alfred (Cranston, RI) with a +22, 93. Alfred had an even keel round, going out in +11 and coming in with +11. Colby had a birdie himself, coming on the 11th hole. The par 4, 377-yard slight dogleg up the hill and to the left provide a difficult pin placement. It wasn't enough to keep Alfred away and the birdie 3 grasped valuable strokes bake as Colby bettered his day one score by seven strokes.

Last but certainly not least for the Knights was Matt Malo (Cranston, RI). Malo was the lone Knight to show improvement on the front nine. Matt went out in +8, 43 which was 14 strokes better than day one. He had a bit of a harder time on the back nine, coming in with +18, 54 for a total of +26, 97 a total of three strokes better than his day one score.
