Warwick, R.I. – May 7, 2018: The CCRI Knights baseball team traveled to the New York to take on the Mustangs of Monroe College this past weekend. The Knights split the doubleheader, winning game one 3-0 and losing game two 2-3. The split gives CCRI a 19-18 overall season record, 7-5 in Region XXI play and 1-3 in league play.

CCRI – 3 Monroe – 0 (7 Innings)

Game one of the doubleheader would prove to be a classic. A stalemate for six straight innings saw neither team able to break the deadlock. This was a byproduct of the lights out pitching of Max Marcotte (Coventry, RI). Marcotte threw five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out eight Monroe batters. Coming in for relief was Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) the fellow pitcher from Coventry pitched in similarly dominant fashion as he pitched two scoreless innings, also allowing a mere two hits and striking out two.

The offense was sparked in the top of the seventh, with the game tied at 0-0 as Steve Cochrane (Guilford, CT) stepped up both literally and figuratively as he hit a pinch-hit two-run triple to take a late 2-0 lead over the mustangs. A third and final run was scored off a one-run double from the bat of Owen Wosleger (East Hampton, CT). The Mustangs had no answers in the bottom of the seventh and the Knights were victorious in game one, 3-0.

The Knights offense amasses nine total hits, leading the effort was Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) as he went 2-3 with two singles. Michael Castillo (Cranston, RI) continued his red-hot run of form as he batted 2-3, also with two singles. Owen Wosleger went 2-4 in game one, with one double and one single, adding one RBI. Nick D'Ambra (Coventry, RI) chipped in with a single and a stolen base. Joey Barter (Coventry, RI) was 1-3 with a single and a run scored. Steve Cochrane's lone hit was that crucial triple in the seventh inning which also gave the slugger two RBI in game one.

CCRI – 2 Monroe – 3 (7 Innings)

Game two was not quite as dramatic as the first game but still managed all the excitement. Scoring started early as the Knights scored once in the top half of the second and the Mustangs answered back with two runs of their own. Monroe would take another run in the third inning, making the lead 3-1. CCRI scored one more run in the top of the fifth but couldn't manage enough for the comeback as the game ended in a 3-2 loss for the Knights.

The CCRI offense was led by Owen Wosleger as he hit one single and batted in one run. Austin Davis had a double as his lone hit as did Exavier Santiago (Bridgeport, CT). The final hit came off the bat of Jacob Frost (Cranston, RI) going 1-3 with a single and a run scored.

The story for game two was the pitching effort made by Zach D'Andrea (Warwick, RI) as he threw a complete game, six innings. D'Andrea conceded three runs off of six hits while also striking out four batters.

UP NEXT: The CCRI Knights baseball team will host the Blue Knights of Northern Essex on Tuesday May 8th at 3:30 PM.
