Knights Drop DH in Final Outing of 2018

Warwick, R.I. – May 14, 2018: The CCRI Knights baseball team traveled to Groton, CT to take on the Pointers of UConn Avery Point (UCAP) for the final two games of the season. The Sunday noon doubleheader saw two exciting games that were both decided by one run and both went the way of the Pointers 6-5 and 4-3 respectively. The Knights finish the 2018 season with a record of 20-21, 8-8 in Region XXI play and 1-6 in league play.

CCRI – 5 UCAP – 6 (9 Innings)

The Knights started the game quickly, scoring three runs in the first and two runs in the second. Jarrad Grossguth (Coventry, RI) kicked things off with a three-run shot in the first inning. Nick D'Ambra (Coventry, RI) batted in another run with a single in the second inning. UCAP would come back with a five-run sixth to tie the game up.

Grossguth went 1-3 on the day with one run scored a stolen base and three RBI. D'Ambra had a single while swiping three stolen bases. Exavier Santiago (Bridgeport, CT) had two singles as he went 2-4. Austin Davis (Hollywood, FL) had a single and a run scored. Michael Castillo (Cranston, RI) added a single with one run scored and also snatched three stolen bases. Zach Odsen (Providence, RI) rounded off the hitting with a single.

Zach D'Andrea pitched for the Knights going eight and one third innings. Allowing two earned runs. D'Andrea's strong effort held UCAP within striking distance for as long as he could, until UCAP scored the winning, walk off run in the bottom of the ninth to win the game 6-5.

CCRI – 3 UCAP – 4 (7 Innings)

Game 2 saw a flip in the script as it was UCAP that jumped out to an early lead after scoring three runs in the second and one run in the third. The Knights would take a large chunk back as they scored three runs in the fifth inning. That wouldn't be quite enough as the game ended with the 4-3 score line giving UCAP their second win of the day.

Zach Odsen threw for the Knights, going six innings in which, he conceded three earned runs. The offense was supplied by Justin Brown (Wallingford, CT) as he batted 2-3 with one double and a single and a run scored. Exavier Santiago added a double as well as a single as he went 2-3 with an RBI in game two. Michael Castillo was 1-3 with a single as was Ray Aponte (East Providence, RI) and Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI). Aponte added a run scored and McCann notched a runs scored as well as a RBI.
