2018 CCRI Athletics Awards Ceremony

Warwick, R.I. – May 4, 2018: The Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) Department of Athletics held their annual Student-athlete Awards Ceremony Thursday afternoon in the Alumni room on the CCRI Knight Campus in Warwick. The CCRI Department of Athletics presented nine departmental awards along with every team honoring the Most Valuable Players (or Athletes) in each sport.

Garnering the Ann Cullen Scholarship Award for being the overall to student-athlete was Sophomore Allison Lenox (North Kingstown, RI) is member of the Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Track Teams with a 3.49 Grade Point Average. Lenox earned First Team All-American Honors after winning the Triple Jump at the 2017 DIII Track & Field Nationals with a 10.21m effort. She also earned Second Team Academic All-American Honors for her work in the classroom. She is ranked No. 1 by the NJCAA this year in the Triple jump and will be returning to the Track Nationals this year having already qualified for the 400m and Triple Jump. Lenox was also named Female Most Valuable Athlete of the Cross Country and Track Teams. If that was not enough Lenox was also honored as the Distinguished Awards Recipient from the RIAIAW as CCRI's top female Student-athlete.

Garnering the Mary O'Neill Scholarship Award was Sophomore Isabella Rinne (Charlestown, RI). Rinne was a Co-Captain the Lady Knights soccer team. She started every game at defense over her two-year career at CCRI helping CCRI complete six shutouts on defense and offering two goals and two assists. Isabella also earned the Ralph Catuogno Female Scholar Athlete Award for having the highest GPA which was 3.62. Isabella was also named 2017 Lady Knights soccer Co-MVP along with Fellow Co-Captain Gabrielle Caruso (Cranston, RI).

Earning the Charlie Wilkes Scholarship Award was Sophomore Igor Almeida (Praia, Cape Verde). Almeida was a Co-Captain on the Knights basketball team. Igor scored career 133 points, with 170 Rebounds, 13 blocked shots, nine assists and 13 steals and started 12 games for the Knights. Almeida also earned the Male Ralph Catuogno Scholar-Athlete Award for having the highest GPA which was impressive 3.97.

Earning the Joseph Andre Jr. Award as the top freshman Athlete was Josh Williams (Atlanta, GA). Williams was a star guard on the Knights basketball team. He was named Third Team All-American by the NJCAA after being ranked No. 10 in scoring with 22.2 points per game and ranked No. 30 with 153 assists. He also set a new Single-Game Scoring record dropping 56 points on Bristol CC breaking the 26-year old record set by Brendan Murphy. As you can probably surmise Williams was also named The Knights MVP for the 2017-18 season.

The last Departmental Award, the Izzy Siperstein Award had Co-Winners. First there was Matt Gutelius (South Kingstown, RI) from the Knights baseball team. As a freshman Gutelius batted .351 with 13 hits including three doubles and three homeruns with eight RBI and 13 runs scored while shifting between first base and DH. As a sophomore he helped the team by moving to the pitching staff and pitched 20.1 innings with one victory and 16 strikeouts for the Knights. Then From the CCRI Softball team Stevie-Rae Wood (Little Compton, RI) who was the other Co-Winner. As a freshman Stevie-Rae had nine hits, eight runs scored and three RBIs and led the team with 10 walks while adding eight stolen bases. As a sophomore she was named Tri-Captain and batted lead-off with 15 hits including three doubles with 11 RBIs and 19 runs scored while adding 12 walks and led the team with five stolen bases. Wood was also named MVP for the Lady Knights Softball team for the 2018 season.

The Balance of the team MVPs were as follows: Male Most Valuable Athlete for Cross Country and Track was Ryan Pagliaro (Smithfield, RI). The Most Valuable Player from Men's Soccer was Cam DiMaria (Coventry, RI) who has already transferred to the University of Rhode Island but came back for the ceremony. The Women's Volleyball MVP was Tara Watters (West Warwick, RI). The Men's Club Volleyball MVP was Drew O'Donnell (North Smithfield, RI). Women's basketball had Co-MVPs: Tiondra Hands (Boynton, Beach, FL) and Kelsey Hernandez (New Britain, CT). The MVP for Baseball was Austin Davis (Hollywood, RI). Finally, the MVP for Golf was Tyler Boisclair (West Warwick, RI).

CCRI is still finishing up their baseball, Track & Field and Golf seasons. We wish good luck to all the teams left participating. However, the Awards Ceremony was an excellent day where we got to honor our best and show our appreciation for them choosing to continue their academic and athletic careers at CCRI.
