Warwick, R.I. – October 2, 2017: The CCRI Lady Knights volleyball team traveled to Montgomery College in Rockville, MD for a difficult tri-match versus the Catamounts of Potomac State College from West Virginia and the Raptors of Montgomery College from Rockville, MD. The Lady Knights lost both matches: 3-0 to Potomac and 3-1 to Montgomery College. With the two losses the Lady Knights’ overall record falls to 15-5 on the season.

“This was a very difficult match to watch as a coach”, commented Head Coach Will Amaral after the Lady Knights first defeat in nine matches. The CCRI Lady Knights have never beaten the Catamounts not because they can't defeat them but because they get sucked into playing Potomac's style of game. The coaches worked tirelessly to prepare CCRI for the lack of energy Potomac plays with but with too many errors the girls just couldn't counter their DII counterpart’s game. Roselyn Vasquez (Providence, RI) was the lone bright spot for the Lady Knights with 10 kills and six digs.

This was a rematch of the quarter-final match from the Dragon Invite earlier this season where CCRI won 3-1. Although a better match than earlier in the day, CCRI made too many untimely errors to pull this one out. Angelis Perez (Central Falls, RI) had another strong serving game with six Aces and 24 Digs. Tara Watters (West Warwick, RI) accompanied her with four Aces, 28 digs, a Block and 15 Kills. Sam Elkas (Cumberland, RI) had eight kills, a block, and an Ace. Dahlia Rafael-Tirado (Providence, RI) led the offense with 39 assists while adding two kills.

Coach Amaral added after the difficult day: "As a coach this was a tough one to swallow. With a very tough stretch of games coming up, we as coaches need to go back to fundamentals and the girls need to decide (as a team) what kind of season they wish to have. We need to do a better job as a cohesive unit in all phases!"

The next match for the Lady Knights will be October the 7th when they will host their Annual Dig Pink and Sophomore Day beginning at 8:30am. CCRI will host Division II Morton and CCBC-Essex in their bracket while four DIII teams will also square-off: Howard College, Northern Essex CC, MassBay CC and The County College of Morris. In addition to the Dig Pink Cancer Awareness event CCRI will also honor their four sophomores: Co-Captain Dahlia Rafael-Tirado, Co-Captain Megan Johns (Oakland, RI), Angelis Perez and Roselyn Vasquez.
