CCRI Volleyball Goes 3-2 in Matches at Montgomery

Warwick, R.I. – October 3, 2018: The CCRI Lady Knights Volleyball team traveled to Montgomery College in Rockville, MD this weekend to play the very talented Raptors of Montgomery College, the Catamounts of Potomac State College, the Dragons of Howard Community College and the Hawks of the College of Southern Maryland. CCRI fell 3-0 to the Montgomery College and 3-0 to Potomac State. However CCRI reversed their fortune by defeating Howard 3-1 and Southern Maryland 3-0 twice. With the 3-2 day the Lady Knights are now 9-9 on the season.

CCRI vs Montgomery (0-3): 12-25, 9-25 & 11-25

The Lady Knights faced off against the undefeated Raptors of Montgomery College and did not fare well. CCRI was also dealing with injuries and some adjustments they had to make on the fly versus a very formidable squad from Montgomery. The Raptors made quick work of the Lady Knights defeating them in three straight sets.

Leading the way for CCRI was Tri-Captain Sam Elkas (Cumberland, RI) and Jasharilee Diaz (Central Falls, RI) had three Kills apiece and Setter Christa Fitzsimmons (Warwick, RI) had 10 assists.

CCRI vs Potomac State (0-3): 23-25, 12-25 & 15-25

The Lady Knights had another very formidable opponent in the Catamounts of Potomac State in their second match of the day. CCRI lost again in three sets but played much better than in their first match. CCRI almost took the first set but eh Catamounts were able to edge CCRI 23-25. After the first set Potomac gained momentum and cruised in the final two sets but CCRI showed they can play with the very tough Potomac squad.

Leading the way for CCRI was Tri-Captain Ivelisse Serrano Vargas (Providence, RI) with five Kills, 10 Digs and three Aces. Ivelisse was helped by Manuela Restrepo (Central Falls, RI) with four Kills. Also helping CCRI was Setter Danielle D'Andrea (Lincoln, IL) with 13 assists.

CCRI vs Howard (3-1): 21-25, 25-13, 25-19 & 26-24

After two very tough matches the Lady Knights finally found themselves on the winning end of a match in Rockville, MD. The third match did not start well for CCRI as they lost 21-25. The Lady Knights rallied back to win three straight sets and take the match 3-1 with their final set going extra with a dramatic 26-24 victory. Leading the way for CCRI was Yoeliz Vargas (Providence, RI) with 11 Kills and one Solo Block and Tri-Captain Sam Elkas with 11 Kills. Jasharilee Diaz added eight Kills and Paola Almarante (Woonsocket, RI) had a team-leading 12 digs while Setter Danielle D'Andrea orchestrated the offense well with 26 assists.

CCRI vs College of Southern Maryland (3-0): 25-15, 25-15 & 25-17

The Lady Knights took the momentum of winning their first match of the day versus Howard and built upon that success with a dominating three set victory over the Hawks from the College of Southern Maryland. CCRI took the first two sets handily 25-15 and the final 25-17 with a well-executed offense and dominance from the service line.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Tri-Captain Sam Elkas with a team-high eight Kills and one Solo Block and Tri-Captain Ivelisse Serrano Vargas with five Kills, seven Aces and 13 Digs. Also helping CCRI to victory was Tri-Captain Emily Stengel (Cumberland, RI) with four Aces and two Digs and Danielle D'Andrea ran the offense well with 26 Assists. Rounding out the top performers for CCRI was Yoeliz Vargas with four Kills, and Jasharilee Diaz with three Kills and Ace and three Digs for the match.

CCRI vs Southern Maryland (3-0): 25-21, 25-18 & 25-15

The final match for CCRI saw them face the College of Southern Maryland for the second time in the day. Once again the Lady Knights emerged victorious with a 3-0 victory. This match was a bit tougher than their first meeting with the Hawks putting up bigger fight versus CCRI with CCRI prevailing 25-21, 25-18 and 25-15.

Leading the way for CCRI was Tri-Captain Sam Elkas (Cumberland, RI) with five Kills, an Ace and four Solo Blocks and Tri-Captain Ivelisse Serrano Vargas with six Kills, an Ace and 11 Digs. Also helping CCRI was Yoeliz Vargas with four Kills and three Solo blocks, Jasharilee Diaz had five Kills and four Digs while Danielle D'Andrea provided 23 assists.

The next matches for the Lady Knights will be Saturday the 6th when they host their Annual Dig Pink Tournament versus Region XXI foes Northern Essex, Bunker Hill and MassBay beginning at 9:00am.
