Overview
The Community College of Rhode Island participates in several waiver agreements passed by the Rhode Island General Assembly. Some restrictions apply.
- Waivers must be used for credit courses (no audits).
- Most waivers apply to courses on a space available basis. Waiver students are assigned specific registration dates.
- Waivers may not be used to register for Distance Learning courses which include television and WEB courses or for any other course work that may require the College to pay a per capita licensing fee. The only exception is granted to Disabled Veterans. This waiver does cover television courses.
- Waivers may not be used for study abroad.
UNEMPLOYMENT WAIVER
The Rhode Island General Assembly has enacted legislation granting a tuition and registration fee waiver to unemployed RI citizens on a space available basis. The student is responsible for the payment of all other fees assessed by the College at the time of registration as well as payment for books.
Upon registration, the student must submit a DLT-467 form from his/her local employment office, certifying eligibility to receive benefits pursuant to Chapter 42-44 of the General Laws of Rhode Island. Moreover, the student must complete and pass a Means Test available at the time of registration. A signed copy of an appropriate FEDERAL tax form and W-2 forms must be submitted along with the Means Test. Also, the student must complete a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" which can be processed over the WEB at www.fafsa.ed.gov as well as complete a CCRI Application for Admission if he/she is not currently enrolled in a program of study by the end of the add period for that semester.
SENIOR CITIZENS WAIVER
The Rhode Island General Assembly has enacted legislation granting a tuition waiver to permanent RI residents who are at least 60 years of age on a space available basis. The student is responsible for the payment of all other fees assessed by the College at the time of registration as well as payment for books.
Upon registration, the student must submit evidence of being at least 60 years of age. Moreover, the student must complete and pass a Means Test available at the time of registration. A signed copy of an appropriate FEDERAL tax form must be submitted along with the Means Test. Also, the student must complete a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" which can be processed over the WEB at www.fafsa.ed.gov as well as complete a CCRI Application for Admission if he/she is not currently enrolled in a program of study by the end of the add period for that semester.
RHODE ISLAND NATIONAL GUARD WAIVER
The Rhode Island General Assembly has enacted legislation granting tuition waivers to members of the Rhode Island National Guard. For further information, please contact the Rhode Island National Guard.
DISABLED VETERANS WAIVER
The Rhode Island General Assembly has enacted legislation granting tuition waivers to Disabled American Veterans on a space available basis. The student is responsible for all other fees assessed by the College.
Upon registration, the student must submit evidence of being a permanent
RI resident as well as written proof from the Veteran’s Affairs Office that
he/she is 10% to 100% disabled at the time of registration.
