The supraspinous fossa is separated from the infraspinous fossa by the spine of the scapulaThe supraspinous fossa of the scapula is of functional importance because it is the origin for:
1.    the supraspinatus muscle (one of the four rotator cuff muscles).

It is also the insertion for:
1.    the levator scapulae ventralis muscle.
