The penis is an accessory sex organ.  Proximally it begins with the root of the penis, then the shaft (or body), and finally the glans penis.  It is made up of three erectile cylinders, two corpora cavernosa, and the corpus spongiosum.  The corpus spongiosum houses the urethra.  It is anchored to the pubic arch by the ischiocavernosus muscles that also attach to the crura.  It aids in the transfer of semen from the male to the vagina of the female under normal conditions.  The anatomical position of the penis is in the erect state.  Dr. J is not sure who decided that, probably Plato.
