The ovaries are the primary sex organs of the female. They are homologous to the testicles. In humans they are found lateral to the uterus. They lie against the lateral wall of the pelvis, and are held in place by the mesovarium of the broad ligament (peritoneum). There is a suspensory ligament of the ovary that is part of the broad ligament, as well as by the round ligament of the ovary (formerly the round ligament of the ovary). The round ligament of the ovary attaches it to the wall of the uterus, this is a remnant of the gubernaculum. The ovary releases ova after the onset of puberty and until menopause. In the cat the ovary is wrapped within the infundibulum.
