The greater sciatic notch is on the posterior border of the os coxa between the posterior inferior iliac spine and the ischial spine. It forms part of the greater sciatic foramen.  The remainder of the foramen is formed by sacrospinous and sacrotuberous ligaments, and the spine of the ischium.  The greater sciatic foramen is superior to the pelvic diaphragm.  It allows for communication between the lower limb and the pelvic cavity.  The piriformis muscle passes through the greater sciatic foramen, but you will not be responsible for this muscle.  It is also significant because the sciatic, pudendal, posterior femoral cutaneous, superior and inferior gluteal nerves pass through this notch on its course to the thigh.  The nerve to the quadratus femoris and the nerve to the obturator internus pass through this foramen as well.  Also, the internal pudendal artery and vein, and the superior and inferior gluteal arteries and veins pass through this foramen.
