Men’s soccer begins postseason play in Region XXI quarterfinals against MassBay

The Community College of Rhode Island men’s soccer team has its sights set on a regional title beginning tomorrow in the quarterfinals of the NJCAA Division III Region XXI Men’s Soccer. Tournament.

Following a 4-6-1 regular season under 13-year head coach Gabe Toro, the Knights are the No. 3 seed in this year’s tournament and will host No. 6 seed MassBay Community College tomorrow night at 6 at Macomber Stadium in Central Falls, RI.

The top two seeds, No. 1 Roxbury Community College and No. 2 Bunker Hill Community College, have automatic byes to the semifinals, which begin Saturday. The winner of tomorrow’s CCRI-MassBay game draws the No. 2 Bulldogs at Bunker Hill in Massachusetts. The championship match is Sunday.

After a slow start in 2022, the Knights split their final four games of the regular season. They beat MassBay 5-1 on September 20. The Knights advanced to the finals of last year’s tournament and are chasing their first Region XXI title since 2001.

This year’s team is led by sophomore twin brothers Juan Barrios and Roy Barrios, both from Pawtucket, RI, who led the Knights with eight goals, five assists, and 21 points apiece. Freshmen goalkeepers Brady Linfield (Burrillville, RI) and Lucas Petrarca (Coventry, RI) split time in net this year with Linfield earning eight starts and finishing with a team-best 2.13 goals against average and a pair of shutouts.
