CCRI men’s and women’s soccer combine for 10 All-Region XXI selections in 2022

Ten student-athletes from the Community College of Rhode Island men’s and women’s soccer teams earned All-NJCAA Division III Region XXI honors for the 2022 season.

Sophomores Matt Gibeau (Warwick, RI) and Roy Barrios (Pawtucket, RI) earned First Team honors for the men’s team while freshman goalkeeper Brady Linfield (Burrillville, RI) and sophomore captain Wilson Penafiel (Providence, RI) earned Second Team honors.

The women’s team finished with three First Team selections: Freshmen Catherine Beazley (Kingston, RI), goalkeeper Bailey Patton (Charlestown, RI), and Abigail Cahill (Cranston, RI). Freshmen Kelsey McKenna (West Greenwich, RI), Jenna Groccia (Cranston, RI), and Madison Borges (Smithfield, RI) earned Second Team honors.

This year’s All-Region selections for the men’s team come on the heels of the Knights’ win over Holyoke Community College for the college’s first Division III Region XXI championship in 21 years and subsequent first berth in the NJCAA National Tournament. CCRI finished 7-6-1 and is one of teams vying for a national championship beginning next week in Batavia, NY.

Barrios led the Knights with 24 points, nine goals, and six assists while taking a team-high 40 shots on goal in 14 games. He also ranked 24th in the nation in points and 28th in goals. Gibeau finished fourth on the team with 11 goals and tied for second with five assists in addition to scoring a game-winning goal. Linfield 11 games in net for the Knights, finishing with a 7-3-1 record that included a .795 save percentage (66 total saves) and four shutouts; the latter ranked fourth in the nation. Penafiel, one of three captains on this year’s team, started 12 games and finished with eight points (three goals and two assists).

The women’s team, playing for the first time since 2019 after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 and 2021 seasons, finished 4-4-1 under first-year head coach Jeff Patten and advanced to the semifinals of the Division III Region XXI Tournament.

Patton started every game in net for CCRI and finished with a 1.17 goals-against average and four shutouts, which ranked fifth in the nation. Her .911 save percentage was good enough for fourth overall in Division III. Cahill led the team with 10 assists and finished second with 14 points while Beazley scored three goals and dished out four assists in eight starts.

McKenna led the Knights with 27 points, scoring 11 goals and finishing with five assists. Borges attempted a team-high 17 shots on goal and finished third with 11 points (five assists and three goals) and Groccia anchored a CCRI defense that pitched four shutouts in 2022 and allowed only four goals over its final seven games of the season in October.
