Regine’s complete game lifts softball to its first win of the season in Myrtle Beach

March 14, 2023

Sophomore co-captain Casey Regine (Cranston, RI) pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts Monday as the Community College of Rhode Island softball team earned its first win of the season by beating Hudson Valley Community College 11-7 in Myrtle Beach, SC.

The Knights play a total of eight games as part of their annual Spring Break trip to South Carolina, which concludes Thursday, before returning to Rhode Island for their home opener April 1 at Brayton Park in Cranston – their new home field for the 2023 season.

Regine scattered 10 hits over seven innings and went 1-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored while freshman catcher Ashley Klingberg (Coventry, RI) finished 3-for-4, scored three runs, and drove in three.

Sophomore shortstop Lucie Willett (Charlestown, RI) and freshman third baseman Jenna Medeiros (Swansea, MA) each had two hits and sophomore right fielder Emily Gil (West Warwick, RI) tripled to drive in a pair of runs. The Knights led 6-0 after two innings and 8-2 after five before Hudson Valley chipped away at its deficit.

CCRI is currently 1-3 on its Spring Break trip in games against No. 10-ranked Joliet and Division II opponents Mercer County and Morris, but continues to produce offensively.

The Knights are averaging 7.25 runs per game with Willett, Medeiros, and Klingberg carrying the load offensively; Klingberg has six hits in her last 13 at-bats over the span of three games while Medeiros and Willett have six hits apiece on the trip, including Medeiros’ two-run home run in Sunday’s season-opener against Joliet. Sophomore center fielder Hanna Dias (Charlestown, RI), who led the team in most offensive categories in 2022, went 4-for-4 in a 10-8 loss to Mercer County, also on Sunday.
