Red-hot Knights enter break as one of the nation's most prolific scoring teams

December 21, 2022

The Community College of Rhode Island women’s basketball remains red hot as it enters the holiday break on the heels of an impressive six-game winning streak.

The Knights closed out the calendar year with a 67-16 win over regional rival Holyoke Community College on December 15, their final game before resuming the 2022–23 season on Sunday, January 8 at home against Southern Maine Community College.

CCRI is 10-1 entering 2023 and ranked No. 4 in the most recent NJCAA Division III national poll. Statistically, the Knights are one of the top shooting teams in the nation; they rank 10th in the NJCAA in points per game (74.8), second in field-goal percentage (47.9), and fourth in three-point field-goal percentage (35.7). In addition, three players rank among the top 20 in shooting; sophomore center Maggie Schwab (Narragansett, RI) is third at 61.0 percent, sophomore forward Ashley Lima (Providence, RI) is 11th at 57.0, and sophomore guard Michelle Moreno (Providence, RI) is 19th at 53.4.

The Knights are coming off a season in which they finished 17-7, won the Region XXI championship, and earned a trip to the NJCAA D-III National Tournament. With 15 games remaining, they stand poised to eclipse last year’s win total and make a strong case for defending their regional title. Of those 15 remaining games, seven are against regional foes; the Knights are currently 4-0 against regional competition this year and also finished undefeated against their Region XXI rivals last season.
