December 7, 2022
The Community College of Rhode Island women’s basketball team held steady this week as the No. 5-ranked team in the nation in the latest NJCAA Division III poll.
The Knights improved to 8-1 on Sunday with their fourth consecutive win, beating non-conference foe Herkimer Community College 85-60 at the Warwick Field House. Rounding out the top five in this week’s NJCAA D-III poll is Hostos (6-1), Rochester (7-0), Owens (6-3), and Minnesota West (10-1).
Against Herkimer, the Knights turned a slim, four-point halftime lead into a laugher by outscoring the Generals 21-6 in the third quarter. Sophomore guard Chloe Rayko (Coventry, RI) had her best game of the season with a team-high 25 points 9-of-15 shooting, including seven 3-pointers. Sophomore center Maggie Schwab (Narragansett, RI) chipped in with 18 points and 16 rebounds and sophomore forward Ashley Lima (Providence, RI) finished with 15 points on a remarkable 6-of-7 from the field.
The Knights have been locked at No. 5 in the nation for the past three weeks since jumping two spots from their No. 7 preseason ranking in mid-November. Up next for CCRI is a pair of road games this week starting with a 5 pm showdown Thursday at Region XXI rival Bunker Hill followed by noon tipoff Saturday at Passaic County. The Knights are currently 5-0 in conference play.
