Warwick, R.I. – January 27, 2022:  The No. 8 ranked (NJCAA DIII Women’s Basketball Poll 1/24/22) hosted the Wapiti of The Winchendon School Wednesday evening.  The Lady Knights lost to the Wapiti 61-45. With the loss CCRI falls to 11-4 on the season.

The Lady Knights have had a rough go of it over their last four games with three losses.  They have played some very formidable teams but have not performed up to the level to which they can.  The good news is, the recent woes should serve them well as the regular season ends and they move onto postseason play.

Once again, the Lady Knights found themselves trailing after the first quarter to a very talented Winchendon squad led by 6’0” small forward Stony Brook University commit Lauren Filien who was a tour de force. On the offensive end Filien scored seven of the Wapiti first quarter points which included a 3-pointer.  Her affect of the game was more visible on the defensive end where she blocked multiple shots inside the and altered many others.  The Lady Knights only saving grace in the first quarter was sharpshooter Chloe Rayko (Coventry, RI) who scored eight points in the first including two 3-pointers. Winchendon led CCRI 21-12 after the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a defensive stalemate which saw the Lady Knights outscore the Wapiti 7-4 in the frame to cut the Winchendon lead to six points 25-19 by the halftime break.

In the third quarter both teams slowly started to bet back into rhythm while still retaining their defensive intensity.  The Lady Knights were led by co-captain Michelle Moreno (Providence, RI) who score six points in the quarter penetrating to the basket.  Moreno was helped by center Maggie Schwab (Narragansett, RI) that added five points to the Lady Knights attack. CCRI outscored Winchendon 13-12 in the third to cut the Wapiti lead to just five points 37-32 entering the fourth quarter.

The Wapiti came out in the fourth with their most intense defensive effort of the game with full court pressure which forced the Lady Knights out of their game plan.  Co-captain Michelle Moreno tried her best to keep the Lady Knights in it with six fourth quarter points but it was not enough as the Wapiti sank three 3-pointers to go along with a few easy baskets they made with their defensive pressure to pull away and win by the final score of 61-45.

Leading the way for the Lady Knights was co-captain Michelle Moreno with a game-high 16 points with six rebounds, five steals and two assists. Chloe Rayko had eight points including two 3-pointers with three rebounds.  Maggie Schwab added seven points with 10 rebounds, two steals and an assist. Sophia Berisha and Madi Zancan (Cumberland, RI) led the Wapiti with 13 points apiece.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be Thursday February 3rd at 5:00pm when they will travel to Worcester, MA to play the Wyverns of Quinsigamond Community College.
