Warwick, R.I. – January 30, 2019: The CCRI Knights men's basketball team traveled to Springfield, MA to take on the Rams of Springfield Technical Community College (STCC). A tight one down to the very end, a last driving layup by sophomore co-captain Peter Wilson (Providence, RI) sealed the deal for the Knights, winning 66-65. The victory improves CCRI's season record to 19-3 overall and 16-2 in Region XXI play.

CCRI came into the Tuesday evening game riding a high after earlier that day receiving the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Team of the Week Award as well as being ranked No. 10 in the nation for NJCAA DIII. This all had to be put aside as the STCC Rams stood in their way of continuing and building upon their eight-game winning streak. Freshman Dylan Durante (Johnston, RI) led the way in the first half scoring 15 points. Durante amassed nearly half the CCRI points as they led by only three points, 35-32 at halftime.

The battle would roll on with the Knights leading by as much as six points in the second half. A late charge from the Rams took back the lead and CCRI found themselves trailing 65-64 with two minutes left in the game. The stage was set for Peter Wilson to take back the 66-65 lead with a minute left off a strong drive to the basket. CCRI's defense stepped up massively, getting the stop when it needed it most and the Knights would hold on, winning 66-65.

The Knights were led by sophomore co-captain Peter Wilson scoring a team-high 19 points along with three rebounds, two assists and one steal. Dylan Durante went 5-9 from three-point range tallying 15 points. Sophomore Jake Gillis (Jamestown, RI) added 11 points, eight rebounds and one steal. Freshman Franklin Udeh (Boston, MA) ripped down 11 rebounds while adding four points and two blocks. Sophomore Oscar Iteji (Schenectady, NY) totaled 10 rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. Sophomore co-captain Dave Cabeceiras (Warwick, RI) chipped in nine points, five rebounds, three blocks and one assist. Sophomore co-captain JC Santos (East Providence, RI) had a team-high seven assists with four rebounds, three steals and two points.

Head Coach Rick Harris commented: "Wow! Just glad we survived today. The young men struggled with their emotions the entire game and it showed big time. I have always said that in this league any team can beat any other team on a given night. Tonight, was almost that night. When we were shaking hands at the end, the game's leading scorer Daishawn Craft (21 points) said to me "coach, you were lucky tonight" I replied "great game, but sometimes you would rather be lucky than good". Valuable lesson tonight as we get ready for Thursday's game at Massasoit."

The CCRI Knights men's basketball team will next be in action on Thursday, January 31 at 5:30 p.m. as they travel to Brockton, MA to face off with the Massasoit Community College Warriors.
