Knights Grind Out 1-0 & 4-2 Victories Over Northern Essex!

Warwick, R.I. – April 15, 2019: The CCRI Knights baseball team traveled to Haverhill, MA to face off with the Northern Essex Community College Knights for a Saturday doubleheader. A strong defensive performance with no errors committed in either game CCRI would win game one 1-0 and game two 4-2. The wins improve CCRI's season record to 14-9 overall, 9-1 in Region XXI play and 8-1 in League play.

Game 1: CCRI – 1 Northern Essex – 0 (7 Innings)

A quiet offensive seven innings, game one had just four combined hits. The lone run was scored in the top of the third when speedster freshman Anthony Ramos (Cranston, RI) came home on a playable pass ball. The game was highlighted by the Knights' defense. Starting pitcher freshman Ben Sears (East Providence, RI) kept Northern Essex quiet, allowing just one hit. Four scoreless innings followed CCRI's run and the would wing game one 1-0.

Sears threw the complete seven innings, conceding the one infield hit and one walk while striking out eight batters for his third win of the season. Ben's 48 total strikeout is good for 17th in the nation and his average of 14.24 strikeouts per nine innings is the sixth best in the nation.

The offense was led by Anthony Ramos who scored the lone run while batting 1-2 with a single. Sophomore co-captain Zack Odsen (Providence, RI) reached base three times in game one, batting 1-1 with a single and drawing two walks. Sophomore Jacob Frost (Cranston, RI) rounded off the hitting, going 1-3 with a single.

Game 2: CCRI – 4 Northern Essex – 2 (7 Innings)

The offenses came to life a bit more in game two with both teams recording five hits each. Scoring also improved, CCRI struck first with one run in the top of the first which was quickly answered by Northern Essex scoring two runs in the bottom half. CCRI would take a 3-3 lead in the third inning, scoring two runs and adding one more in the fourth, now leading 4-2. Three scoreless innings saw CCRI on top of game two 4-2.

Taking to the mound in game two was sophomore Joey Barter (Coventry, RI). Barter threw five innings in which he allowed four hits and two earned runs along with striking out two batters in route to his win of the season. Freshman David Meech (Douglas, MA) came in for the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two batters for his first save of the season.

The offense was highlighted by Anthony Ramos as he batted 3-4 with three singles, two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base. Ramos boasts a .476 batting average which pegs him 14th in the nation. A .578 on base percentage is good for 15th, 23 stolen bases which is the seventh most in the nation and 43 runs scored which is 10th in the nation, his ability to get on base and cause havoc can't be overstated.

Sophomore Ray Aponte (East Providence, RI) registered two RBI of sacrifice at bats and added a superb infield performance at third base defensively. Sophomore Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) batted 1-3 with a single and Zack Odsen went 1-4, also a single to round off the offense.

The CCRI Knights baseball team will next be in action on Sunday, April 14th at 12 p.m. as they host the Monroe College Mustangs for a Sunday doubleheader.
