Knights Take Two Wins From Maryland Trip!

Warwick, R.I. – April 29, 2019: The CCRI Knights baseball team traveled south to Catonsville, MD to take on Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville and Potomac State College for a Saturday doubleheader. The Knights played well, winning both games; 16-3 against Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville (CCBC Catonsville) and 8-2 against Potomac State College. The wins improve CCRI's season record to 20-10 overall, 12-1 in Region XXI play and 11-1 in League play.

Game 1: CCRI – 16 CCBC Catonsville – 3 (5 Innings)

CCRI made the over six hour drive down to Catonsville, MD but wasted absolutely not time getting on the scoreboard. The Knights would score two runs in the top of the first and two more in the second inning. CCBC would score one run in the bottom of the second but CCRI would hold a 10-1 lead after scoring three runs in the third inning and yet again in the fourth. A six-run fifth inning gave the Knights a 16-1 lead before CCBC would score two runs in the bottom half to narrow the gap a bit to 16-3. The game would end here in five innings, CCRI winning 16-3.

The explosive CCRI offense totaled 16 hits and was led by sophomore Jacob Frost (Cranston, RI) going 4-4 in game one with four singles, three runs scored and two RBI. Freshman Alejandro Martinez (Cranston, RI) matched Frost as he batted 4-4, four singles with three runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore Kyle McCann (Coventry, RI) had a team leading three RBI while batting 2-4, a homerun, his first of the season and a single as well as one run scored. Sophomore Ray Aponte (East Providence, RI) was 3-4, three singles with three runs scored and two RBI.

On the mound for the Knights was ace pitcher Ben Sears (East Providence, RI). Sears threw five solid innings, allowing five hits, three runs of which only one was earned and striking out nine batters. Ben improves to 5-1 on the year and moves to 21st in the nation with five wins and 5th in the nation, averaging 14.73 strikeouts per nine innings.

Game 2: CCRI – 8 Potomac State – 2 (7 Innings)

In game two, CCRI served as the home team and were held scoreless until the fifth inning. Potomac State scored two runs in the top of the first that weren't answered until a seven-run fifth inning gave the Knights a 7-2 lead. One more run in the sixth gave CCRI an 8-2 lead that they would hold onto, winning by that score line.

The Knights combined for eight hits in game two with Alejandro Martinez leading the way with a 2-3 performance at the plate, one double and one single with two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore co-captain Zack Odsen (Providence, RI) batted 2-3, one double and one single while adding one RBI and one run scored. Ray Aponte went 2-4 in game two with two doubles, one RBI and a run scored.

Sophomore Cristian Woods (East Providence, RI) started on the mound for the Knights and threw the complete seven innings. Woods allowed seven hits and held Potomac State tow two runs while adding two strikeouts.

The CCRI Knights baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, April 30th at 3:30 p.m. as they travel to Holyoke, MA to take on the Holyoke Community College Cougars for a single game.
