Health Sciences Clinical Simulation Laboratory

The Clinical Simulation Laboratory provides students of the allied health professions (respiratory care, dental, emergency medical services) and nursing a wide variety of high fidelity simulation experiences.   The laboratory, located on the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln, RI, opened in 2016.

Clinical simulation is a teaching strategy that provides students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills in a safe, realistic clinical experience. Clinical simulation aids in the development of clinical, interpersonal, interprofessional and critical thinking skills in a safe environment.

Simulation participants are evaluated in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains and constructive performance feedback is provided during a debriefing session. Clinical simulation also provides practicing healthcare providers and institutions with a medium for enhancing interprofessional practice and performance improvement.

The use of clinical simulation as a component of entry level curricula is mandated or embraced by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), National League of Nursing (NLN), American Dental Hygienist Association (ADHA), Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (COARC), Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Professions (CoAEMSP), and the National Association of Emergency Medical Services Educators (NAEMSE).

The laboratory has two simulation bays, a control room, two debriefing rooms, a simulated clean utility/medication room, and a work area.  The simulation bays are designed and outfitted like a modern day hospital room.  Each bay is outfitted with audio visual monitoring and recording equipment with the capability to live stream or playback simulation events into the debriefing rooms.

The laboratory’s inventory of patient simulators is representative of the human lifespan.  The laboratory's inventory of high fidelity simulators includes two SimNewB neonatal simulators, two SimJunior pediatric simulators, two 3G adult simulators, and two SimMom obstetrical simulators.  The laboratory also has two Hill-Rom Affinity birthing beds, two fully stocked crash carts with a cardiac monitor and defibrillator, two V60 non-invasive ventilators and one Nellcor Puritan Bennet 980 ventilator.  The laboratory maintains a library of simulation scenarios.  The clean utility/medication room includes a Pyxis MedStation 4000 automated medication dispenser.

The laboratory is staffed with two fulltime Simulation Technicians and is operational Monday-Friday and occasionally on Saturdays to accommodate weekend students.   The laboratory maintains a master operation schedule with a public view calendar.  For questions or to schedule a simulation event, the laboratory may be contacted at Simulationcenter@ccri.edu.
