Health Sciences Clinical Simulation Laboratory

The Clinical Simulation Laboratory provides students of nursing and the Allied and Rehabilitative Health professions (respiratory care, dental, emergency medical services) a variety of high fidelity simulation experiences. The laboratory, located on the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln, RI, opened in October of 2016.

The Health Sciences Clinical Simulation Laboratory has been granted provisional accreditation for its simulation program through December 31, 2022 by The Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

The Clinical Simulation Laboratory provides students with realistic clinical experiences where they can apply knowledge and skills in a safe environment. The educational activities that are provided in the simulation laboratory aids in the development of clinical, interpersonal, interprofessional and critical thinking skills. Simulation participants are evaluated in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains and constructive performance feedback is provided during a debriefing session.

The laboratory has two simulation bays, a control room, two debriefing rooms, a simulated clean utility/medication room, and a work area. The simulation bays are designed and outfitted like a modern day hospital room. Each bay is equipped with audio visual monitoring and recording equipment with the capability to live stream or playback simulation events in the debriefing rooms. The medication room is also equipped with audiovisual and recording equipment.

The laboratory’s inventory of patient simulators is representative of the human lifespan. The laboratory's inventory of high fidelity simulators includes two SimNewB neonatal simulators, two SimJunior pediatric simulators, two 3G adult simulators, and two SimMom obstetrical simulators. The laboratory also has two Hill-Rom Affinity birthing beds, two fully stocked crash carts with a cardiac monitor and defibrillator, two V60 non-invasive ventilators and one Nellcor Puritan Bennet 980 ventilator. The laboratory maintains a library of simulation scenarios. The clean utility/medication room includes a Pyxis MedStation 4000 automated medication dispenser.

The laboratory is staffed with two fulltime Simulation Technicians and one part-time Simulation Technician. The Coordinator of Clinical Nursing Education oversees the day-to-day operations of the simulation laboratory while a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator oversees all simulation experiences. The simulation lab is operational Monday-Friday and occasionally on Saturdays and Sundays to accommodate weekend students. The laboratory maintains a master operation schedule with a public view calendar.
