About the Application Process

A Message from Dean Woodberry

Thank you for your inquiry about the Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Process. CCRI does recognize learning acquired through work and life experiences, military as well as corporate sponsored training, assuming it can be documented; is college-level and can be applied to specific courses offered at CCRI within a degree program.

There are several options available: national and departmental challenge exams, a review of military or corporate sponsored training as well as the PLA Portfolio process. Whenever there is a test available, it is recommended that students take the test, as this is the easiest and fastest way to document learning. Credit will only be awarded if learning can be identified and documented either through testing; credit recommendation from the American Council on Education or a Portfolio.

When tests are not available, students can develop a PLA Portfolio which addresses outcomes of specific courses taught at CCRI. The PLA Portfolio usually includes a detailed resume, a narrative essay which identifies the learning and documentation that the learning has taken place. Faculty members who teach in the specific content area evaluate the PLA Portfolio and make a credit recommendation. This process once the PLA Portfolio is completed may take 8-10 weeks.

Please complete the application† and return to me with your detailed resume.

As you will notice, the application is asking you to identify specific courses you wish to petition for credit. Please note:

  • These courses must meet requirements of your degree plan. CCRI will not award credit for courses that do not apply to a degree program. To determine specific courses you need to complete your degree you can perform a “degree audit” using MyCCRI. For instructions, please see: /it/Documentation/myccri-tutorials/student/degree_audit.html

Review the course descriptions for those outstanding courses, and identify which courses you would be interested in challenging. For course descriptions go to:

Upon review of the completed PLA application†, a faculty member will be assigned to you and would be happy to meet with you to complete the PLA Portfolio. This process once the PLA Portfolio is completed may take 8-10 weeks.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.
