Public, students invited to visit from playwright Adam Bock at Flanagan Campus

Sept. 21, 2012

Adam Bock.Members of the community and students are invited to join Bock from 7 to 8 p.m. for “The Playwright’s Voice – Conversation with Adam Bock” in Room 2706 at the college’s Flanagan Campus, 1762 Louisquisset Pike, Lincoln. Bock will discuss the state of playwriting in America and take questions from the audience. Linda Murphy Sutherland, a 1991 CCRI alumna, will moderate the event. The Community College of Rhode Island will welcome playwright Adam Bock to campus on Monday, Oct. 1, for a day of events with students and the public. The CCRI Players will present Bock’s play “The Receptionist” later that month.

Earlier in the day, CCRI students will spend 90 minutes with Bock in a playwriting workshop, “The Playwright’s Voice,” starting at 2 p.m. in Room 1426 at the Flanagan Campus. This event is limited to 20 to 25 students on a first-come, first-served basis. Organizers particularly hope that students studying theatre, creative writing and poetry will participate. To sign up, students should email Luke Sutherland.

From 10:30 a.m. to noon, the cast and crew of the “The Receptionist” will meet privately with Bock. The CCRI Players will perform Bock’s dark comedy from Oct. 18 to 21. In the play, ever-efficient receptionist Beverly Wilkins gathers the latest gossip from co-worker Lorraine Taylor on her ill-fated romance with a narcissistic ex-boyfriend. When a mysterious gentleman arrives from the Central Office inquiring about an operational mishap with a client and wants answers from the regional boss, Mr. Raymond, the flirting begins. It’s all fun and games until …

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday, Oct. 18 to 20 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21. General admission costs $9 or $7 for students, seniors, and CCRI faculty and staff. Call 401-825-2219 for reservations.

Bock is the resident playwright at Encore Theatre, a Shotgun Players Artistic Associate and a Clubbed Thumb Artistic Associate.
