CCRI seeks nonprofits interested in participating in seventh annual service day

Dec. 20, 2012

Students on Community Service DayCCRI students take part in a previous Community Service Day. The college is seeking nonprofit agencies to apply for consideration as service sites for the 2013 event.

If you are a nonprofit organization that could use a little elbow grease from a group of willing volunteers in April, the Community College of Rhode Island would like to hear from you.

CCRI will hold its seventh annual Community Service Day on Tuesday, April 9, at several nonprofit organizations across the state. The day was designed to give back to the communities in the towns surrounding the college’s four main campuses in Lincoln, Providence, Warwick and Newport and its satellite campus in Westerly.

Past projects at other nonprofits across the state have included interior painting and cleaning; landscaping and outdoor beautification; inventory cataloging; sorting donated food and clothing; working with clients and more.

The nonprofit agency decides the number of volunteers the site can accommodate, identifies the projects, and provides tools such as rakes, paint brushes and paint to complete the job. The college provides an army of T-shirt-clad student, staff and faculty helpers as well as lunch for volunteers and key agency coordinators.

To accommodate our students’ and employees’ class and work schedules, the college offers morning and afternoon shifts, though many volunteers stay the entire day. CCRI also provides a site coordinator for each location to serve as liaison with the nonprofit, organize the shifts and supervise the volunteers.

If your nonprofit can accommodate at least 10 volunteers and you would be interested in being considered as a site for CCRI’s Community Service Day, please ask your executive director or chief administrative officer to fill out the online form by Tuesday, Jan. 15. A member of the Community Service Day committee will be in touch with all who apply.
