Flanagan gallery welcomes New York artist
Feb. 28, 2011
The Community College of
Rhode Island Flanagan Campus Art Gallery will present “Days of Hope and
Bandages,” an exhibition of collage paintings and installation by New
York-based artist Karen Schiff through March 31. An opening reception will be
held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2.
Schiff said she began making artwork out of medical tape and hospital gowns years ago after her parents started going in for surgery. “I was drawn to these materials because they are interesting ‘papers’ – their textures and translucencies are compellingly beautiful distractions from the anxieties that accompany illness. Cutting and tearing are also welcome activities that channel the energy of worry.
“Being in the hospital means juggling optimism with circumstances. A bandage covers a wound, but it also marks the potential for recovery. Hope itself implies difficulty – the hope is for a better future than whatever is happening at the moment. While medicine can help in this process, optimism is an internal resource. I have tried to make the pieces in this exhibition glow from the inside.”
The gallery is located in Room 2420 on the first floor at CCRI’s Flanagan Campus, 1762 Louisquisset Pike, Lincoln. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Admission to the reception and exhibition is free, and the gallery is handicapped accessible. For information, e-mail Gallery Director Tom Morrissey.
