Test Timer for New Tests

NOTE: We highly recommend faculty set up a CIT consultation and test this timer before using on a live test. This script is written to cause the test to submit 10 seconds before the actual time is up, to allow time for the submission process - though you will encounter some cases where it takes longer than 10 seconds to submit, resulting in a Needs Grading message.

We suggest you include this message to students in the instructions:

If you do not submit the test at least 10 seconds before the time is up, the test will submit automatically. So if the test has a 60 minute time limit, you actually only have 59 minutes, 50 seconds to complete the test, as the time it takes to complete the submission process, which can take up to 10 seconds, is figured in the time.

Installing the test timer into a new test:
Instructions
Step 1

From the Control Panel, located under Course Management, click on Course Tools, and select Tests, Pools, and Surveys.

Step 2

Click on Tests and on the next page select Build Test.

Step 3

In the Instructions section, turn the Visual Text Box Editor to OFF and select the HTML radio button below the text box. Paste the following into the text box:

<p>insert your instructions here</p>
<script language="javascript" src="/webapps/pu-test-timer-bb_bb60/counter_endtime.js" type="text/javascript" ></script>

Type your instructions where it says "insert your instructions here", between <p> and </p>.

Step 4

Click Submit and finish creating the test.

Step 5

Add the test to whichever content area you would like. Click the chevron to the right of the test name and select Edit Test Options from the drop-down menu

Step 6

Under 2. Test Availability check off the Set Timer box and then select the completion time. Click Submit.
