1994 Hall of Fame inductee - Joan S. Swedberg

Joan S. Swedberg

Joan S. Swedberg devoted 17 years of her teaching career to the Community College of Rhode Island. She retired as chair of the Department of Distributive and Office Studies.

While at CCRI, Swedberg developed the use of the multimedia lab to enhance the training of secretarial science students. She also produced a television learning program for telephone techniques and job-finding skills, wrote several workbooks for secretarial courses, and was instrumental in helping the college secure federal grants to supplement and upgrade the training of business students.

Before joining the College’s faculty, Swedberg taught for 17 years in the Warwick School system and served as chair of the Business Department at Portsmouth High School. She was a consultant and instructor for the State of Rhode Island Training and Development Department and for various businesses and industries.

Swedberg served as a board member for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges’ Commission on New England Association of Business Teachers. She was a past president of the Administrative Management Society and a member of the National Secretaries Association.

Swedberg earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Education from Bryant University and a and a master’s degree from the University of Connecticut.
