Professor Janet Nelson Christensen graduated from Rhode Island Junior College in 1975 with an ADN. She earned her BSN from Notre Dame College in Maryland in 1981. She received her MSN in Maternal Child Health in the Clinical Nurse Specialist role with a focus on Neonatology from the University of Maryland in 1985. She became certified as a Clinical Nurse Educator from Indiana University in 2006.
Professor Christensen began her nursing career at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She worked in Adult Neurology initially then transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She also worked in Utilization Review and Risk Management.
Professor Christensen’s first teaching position was in Staff Development for Neonatal Intensive Care, Pediatric Intensive Care, and Pediatrics at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. In 1987 she entered nursing education at the college level starting at Salve Regina University. In 1994 she began teaching at the University of Rhode Island in Pediatrics and Maternity Nursing. She has been at the Community College of Rhode Island since 1998. Professor Christensen teaches Pediatric and Maternity nursing in the ADNU 2050 course with clinical instruction at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. She has also taught the Dosage Calculations course. Her main committee work involves production of the Pinning Ceremonies for the students.
Professor Christensen is a member of National League of Nurses and Sigma Theta Tau, Pi Chapter. She has authored a CD-ROM to accompany Math for Meds 9th Edition. She also volunteers with Pet Therapy, being certified through classes at the Community College of Rhode Island.
