Technical Standards:
Each program has developed technical standards to assist interested applicants
and continuing students to understand the tasks which a person working in that job
would typically be expected to perform. The D.O.T. categorizes physical work levels
as Sedentary, Light, Medium, Heavy, Very Heavy. The occupational titles listed here
fit the Light or Medium work definitions.
Accommodation:
Students in the health programs with a documented need for reasonable accommodation
are encouraged to contact the Office of Disability Services for Students as early
as possible. This will help ensure that reasonable accommodations are provided in
a timely manner. See Disability Services for Students, page 19.
Admission Requirements:
Specific admission requirements may vary from program to program. However, the
following are basic requirements for all programs in the Health and Rehabilitative
Sciences division:
(*) See specific program listings. Note: The Ultrasound and MRI certificate programs require ARRT certification or permission
Application:
Applicants to the health programs at CCRI are encouraged to submit an application
to the program of their choice as early as possible. Admission is on a first-come
first-served basis once applications are complete. Note that some programs may have
spring or summer start dates. See Admissions Information, page 10.
Initial acceptance will be for General Studies until program requirements are met. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply to their program of choice at any time. Admission to specific health programs is considered after an official high school transcript or general equivalency diploma (GED) is on file and program admission requirements have been satisfactorily completed.
Application checklist:
__ Submit application for program of choice
__ New students: Request that official copy of transcript from your high school or GED be forwarded to CCRI Office of Enrollment Services. Include date of graduation.
__ Transfer students: request official college transcript be forwarded to CCRI Office of Enrollment Services ; send written request with your application for credit transfer toward the program to which you are applying
__ Complete college-wide placement testing
__ Complete admission requirements for program of choice.
Academic Progress:
For most programs, students must maintain a 2.0 GPA while in the program. PHTA,
OCTA & TMSG students must achieve a grade of 75 percent. Students who do not maintain
the expected level of academic progress will become program dismissals.
Program faculty reserve the right to require withdrawal of any student from the
program or to refuse reinstatement based on the student’s academic, clinical or
professional performance.
Advanced Standing/Challenge Examinations:
Applicants with previous education or experience who wish to discuss advanced standing
or challenge specific courses should contact the Department Chairperson or Program
Director for information.
Background Check:
Students enrolled in the health programs at Community College of Rhode Island
will submit to criminal background checks done through the Security Department.
These checks are necessary in order to meet requirements of our field placement
sites. Individuals who have been convicted of a felony may not be able to attend
certain clinical experiences during their course of study and may not be eligible
to sit for licensing or credentialing examinations administered by regulatory boards
upon graduation. For more information contact the Dean, Department Chairperson,
or the appropriate regulatory board.
CPR Certification:
All students in the health programs must maintain current certification in American
Heart Association - CPR for Healthcare Providers. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
(CPR) certification is valid for two years. HEAL 0200 - CPR for Healthcare Providers
or the equivalent is required for students in all CCRI health programs who do not
have current certification in CPR. Students must provide proof of AHA CPR certification
to the College nurse as part of health record documentation per program policies.*
See page 8 for more information.
*See program for details: DAST, DHYG, DMSC, MLTC, MRIC, Nursing (NURS, LPNU, ADNU), OCTA, PHLE, PHTA, RENL, RESP, TMSG, XRAY
Health Insurance:
Health insurance is not provided by the college or field placements. Students
are strongly encouraged to obtain health insurance coverage.
Health Record :
Students accepted into the health programs must submit complete health records
in order to begin the technical courses. The health record requires a physical exam
and specific documentation showing vaccination and immunity (see page 19). See program
policies for more detail on when health records are due. Students without complete
health records will not be allowed to start clinical rotations/field placements.
All students in the health programs are strongly encouraged to take the Hepatitis B series of three vaccinations. Applicants are encouraged to begin the Hepatitis B series as soon as possible and provide documentation of vaccinations as they are given.
Reinstatement:
Reinstatement in the health programs is not automatic and is based on space
availability. Priority is given to students in good academic standing at the time
of withdrawal. Students wishing to be readmitted must meet the following criteria:
Students who are program dismissals may request reinstatement one time only. Students who are dismissed from the program for academic reasons a second time may not return to the program. Students who do not follow the recommended sequence may delay their graduation date.
Students returning to the Nursing Program may be required to repeat previous course work and be approved by the Scholastic Standing Committee. (See nursing, page 90. )
Transportation:
Students are responsible for transportation to their field placement sites.
Uniforms & Equipment:

if applicable.
