Oceanography (OCEN)

OCEN 1010 – Introduction to Oceanography - 3 Credits

A study of the total marine environment with emphasis on basic facts and principles of physical, chemical, biological and geological oceanography. Topics include the origin of oceans and the composition and history of seawater; oceanic currents, tides, waves and beaches; the sea floor, plant and animal life in the sea; oceanic resources, minerals and food, and marine pollution; undersea living; marine farming; and the laws of the sea and the coastal region of Rhode Island. Note: Completion of both OCEN 1010 AND OCEN 1030 will satisfy one laboratory science requirement in the Liberal Arts and General Studies programs. Lecture: 3 hours

OCEN 1020 – Applied Oceanography - 3 Credits

Topics include ocean resources; minerals and fossil fuels, and marine mining; offshore petroleum exploration, operation and development; and alternative energy resources from the oceans. The course also explores geological and geophysical techniques including satellite observation and remote sensing of the oceans; subsurface and aerial maps and photos; and hydrographic charts and geochemical techniques of ascertaining the quality of sea water. Oceanic problems on national, state and local levels are examined at greater depth. Narragansett Bay is taken as the case study. Lecture: 3 hours

OCEN 1030 – Oceanography Laboratory - 1 Credit

A comprehensive laboratory and field training which employs oceanographic techniques and instrumentation to determine the quality of sea water and its physical and chemical properties. Macro and microscopic examination of marine sediments, minerals and organisms, field work in Narragansett Bay and vicinity using field-testing outfits and a visit to the oceanographic laboratory aboard a research ship are included. A laboratory project must be submitted at the end of the term. Note: Completion of both OCEN 1010 AND OCEN 1030 will satisfy one laboratory science requirement in the Liberal Arts and General Studies programs. Lab: 2 hours
