DENT 1010–Introduction to Dental Radiography - 1 Credit
This course provides an opportunity for practicing dental assistants
to learn the basic principles and techniques of intraoral and panoramic radiography.
Topics will include characteristics of radiation, radiation biology, radiation protection,
infection control, quality assurance and radiographic interpretation and evaluation.
Students will expose, process, mount and evaluate radiographs during laboratory
sessions. This course will also aid in preparing dental assistants to sit for the
Dental Assisting National Board. Successful completion of this course satisfies
the requirements set by the RI Department of Health for exposure of radiographs
in the dental setting. (Prerequisite: Minimum three months experience as a chairside
dental assistant) Lecture: 2 hours, Lab: 3 hours
DENT 1100–Dental Assisting National Board Review - 1 Credit
This course will serve as a review and preparation for dental
assistants who wish to sit for the General Chairside and Infection Control components
of the DANB. Material will include collection and recording of clinical data, chairside
dental procedures, dental materials, laboratory materials and procedures, patient
education and oral health management, medical/dental emergencies, office operations,
and infection control. Study skills and test-taking strategies will also be discussed.
Lecture: 3 hours
DENT 2010 – Oral Radiography - 4 Credits
A foundation course for oral radiographers. Topics include the
fundamentals of radiation physics, generation and control of the radiation beam,
basic radiation biology and methods of population protection, films and film processing,
radiographic projection, and basic radiographic anatomy and pathology. Supervised
practice is provided in exposing, processing, mounting and interpreting oral radiographs.
(Prerequisite: Enrollment in Dental Assisting or Dental Hygiene Program) Lecture:
3 hours, Lab: 3 hours
DENT 2020 – Dental Materials - 2 Credits
A study of the materials used in dental practice, including considerations
for their selection, their composition, properties and uses. (Prerequisite: Enrollment
in Dental Assisting or Dental Hygiene Program) Lecture: 2 hours
DENT 2220 – Dental Materials Lab for Dental Hygienists - 1 Credit
Hands on experience for the dental hygiene student to learn and
practice techniques that are performed in dental hygiene practice. (Prerequisite:
Acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program; Corequisite: DENT 2020) Lab: 3 hours
DENT 2225 – Dental Materials for Dental Assistants - 1 Credit
Hands on experience for the dental assisting student to develop
skills in the preparation and manipulation of those materials commonly used in dental
practice. (Prerequisite: Enrollment in Dental Assisting Program) (Corequisite: DENT
2020) Lab: 4 hours
