This should be an exciting year at CCRI for the sport of Cross Country. The college will host the 2008 NJCAA Division III National Championship on Saturday November 8th. CCRI Cross Country will also be holding two other exciting competitions at the Flanagan Campus this autumn. On Saturday, September 27th, Rhode Island College will be holding their annual Ray Dwyer Invitational at the Flanagan campus. Also on Saturday, October 4th , the CCRI cross country team will be hosting the Tri-State invitational. All three competitions promise to bring a nice mix of talented runners from the NCAA Division III and NJCAA Division III ranks to the beautiful Flanagan Campus this season.
The CCRI team will begin their 2008 competition season on Saturday, September 20th at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. The team will be led by second year runner James Sylvestre who in 2007 placed 7th at the NJCAA Division III Championships. James will be joined by 2007 team mate Chris Allegretta. Both men are training hard as they gear up for this season’s first event. James and Chris will also be Co captains of this years team. Sylvestre and Allegretta will be joined by five first year runners in 2008. Chris Pereira and Nate Cabana, 2007 Cumberland High graduates, should play strong rolls on the CCRI squad. Josh Santos from Shea High along with Tollgate High standout Matthew Arrico will be among the CCRI top runners. Dennis Lafleur, 2006 Coventry High graduate, will round out the top seven on this year’s team. Both James Sylvestre and Chris Pereira have the potential to run in the time range of 26:30 thru 28:30 for the men’s 8k distance. This time range could place them well at most of the 2008 season’s competitions. Sophomore Chris Allegretta, along with the remaining men should be able to cover the 8k distance in the 29:00 to 31:00 time range. The seven runners competing at this level could make for a fairly competitive squad in the NJCAA Division III ranks for 2008.
