Women's Softball Coaching Staff
Liz Afonso enters her sixth season as head coach of the women’s softball team. Over the past five seasons she has compiled a 101-56 win-loss record and twice received the Region XXI Coach of the Year Award in 2010 and 2011.
Before taking the reins as head coach, Afonso served as the program’s assistant coach for nine years. She helped lead the Lady Knights to regional championship titles in four of her last seven seasons as an assistant. The Lady Knights have continued on that winning path as Region XXI Champions in 2010, 2011 and 2012, and district runner-up in 2010.
Afonso has more than 27 years of coaching experience at the middle school, high school and amateur levels. She previously coached the Lincoln Middle School team to three state championships and four division titles in five years at the helm. She also coached her ASA Travel Team to a top 10 finish in the Amateur Softball Association of America National Championship.
Afonso is a guidance counselor and mathematics teacher at Narragansett High School and holds a master's degree in counseling from Providence College and a bachelor's degree in mathematics with a concentration in secondary education from Rhode Island College. She lives in Smithfield, Rhode Island with her husband, Kevin, and her two children.
Jess Borden '11
Jess Borden a former Lady Knight returns for her second season as an assistant coach. This year, she will serve as the pitching coach. While at CCRI, Borden left her mark on the CCRI records books both as a pitcher and hitter. She is a graduate of Rhode Island College where she went on to play for two years after graduating from CCRI.
Cait Montella '09
Caitlin Montella, who played softball for CCRI during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, is serving as an assistant coach for her fourth season. She works with the Lady Knights during practices and assists with team fundraising efforts.
During her career as a Lady Knight, Montella batted .394 with 39 hits in 99 at bats, tallying eight doubles, 27 RBIs and 27 runs scored. She received All-Region XXI honors as a sophomore. She graduated from CCRI in 2009 with an associate degree and lives in Warwick, Rhode Island.
Nancy Santopadre from North Providence, Rhode Island, where she played at North Providence High School and is a retired Providence Police Officer. Her key role as an outfield and hitting coach is crucial to the Lady Knight’s success.
